US Banking for Non-Residents: Open a Business Bank Account

Concierge service for US Banking for Non-Residents. You hire My Latin Life; local immigration specialists (and licensed counsel where required) file on your behalf. The deliverable: an opened multi-currency or local bank account in your name — not advice, not a DIY packet.

US Banking for Non-Residents: Open a Business Bank Account with Your LLC

Getting a US bank account as a non-resident used to mean flying to the United States, walking into a branch, and hoping the manager would open an account for a foreign national. That process is largely dead. Today, three fintech banks — Mercury, Relay, and Bluevine — have made US business banking fully accessible to non-residents who own a US LLC. No branch visit required. No US address required. No SSN required.

This service helps you navigate the entire process: choosing the right bank for your situation, preparing your documentation, submitting your application, and troubleshooting any compliance requests. If you do not yet have a Wyoming LLC, we handle that first — a US LLC and EIN are required to open any of these accounts.

Why You Need a US Bank Account

For non-residents running location-independent businesses, a US bank account is not a luxury — it is infrastructure. Here is what it unlocks:

  • Stripe and PayPal. Both processors require a US bank account linked to a US entity to receive payouts in USD without third-party conversion fees or payout delays. With a US LLC and US bank account, your Stripe payouts land in USD directly.
  • USD-denominated transactions. Invoicing in USD from a US account removes currency friction for US clients and eliminates international wire complications.
  • Domestic US wire transfers. Receiving payment from US companies via ACH or domestic wire is far simpler when you have a US account. International wires carry fees, SWIFT delays, and compliance friction that domestic transfers do not.
  • Credibility. A US bank account number on your invoices signals to US clients that you operate a legitimate US business. It removes a psychological barrier that can slow sales.
  • Separation from personal accounts. Running business revenue through a dedicated US business account keeps your finances clean, makes accounting straightforward, and protects the LLC’s liability shield.

What You Need to Open a US Business Bank Account as a Non-Resident

Every bank has slightly different requirements, but the core documents are the same across Mercury, Relay, and Bluevine:

  • Employer Identification Number (EIN). This is non-negotiable. Every US bank account requires an EIN. It is the tax ID for your business. Our Wyoming LLC Package includes EIN procurement.
  • Articles of Organization (or Certificate of Formation). The stamped document from Wyoming’s Secretary of State confirming your LLC is active and in good standing.
  • Operating Agreement. A signed document describing ownership, management, and member rights. Most banks require this to verify who is authorized to operate the account.
  • Passport. A clear scan of your valid passport is required for identity verification. Some banks may request two forms of ID.
  • Proof of address. A recent utility bill, bank statement, or government document showing your name and address. This does not need to be a US address.
  • Business description. Banks will ask what your business does, where your revenue comes from, and who your customers are. Have a clear, concise answer prepared — vague descriptions raise compliance flags.

Mercury

Overview

Mercury is the leading business banking platform for online businesses and startups. It was built specifically for founders who operate remotely, and its compliance team is experienced with foreign-owned LLCs. If you choose only one bank, most non-resident LLC owners start here.

Key Features

  • No monthly fees, no minimum balance
  • Accepts foreign-owned LLCs and foreign passport holders as signatories
  • 100% online account opening — no branch visit required
  • Free ACH transfers and domestic wires
  • Virtual and physical debit cards
  • Stripe, PayPal, and payment processor integration
  • Direct integration with QuickBooks, Xero, and other accounting platforms
  • FDIC-insured through partner banks (Evolve Bank and Trust; Choice Financial Group)
  • Multi-user access with role-based permissions

Application Process

Apply at mercury.com. The online application takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Upload your EIN confirmation letter, Articles of Organization, Operating Agreement, and passport. Mercury typically approves foreign-owned LLCs in 1-3 business days. If their compliance team has questions, they will email you — respond promptly and thoroughly to avoid delays.

Common Compliance Requests

Mercury may ask for additional information about your business model, revenue sources, or customer base. This is standard KYC (Know Your Customer) due diligence, not a red flag. A clear business description and honest answers resolve most compliance requests within 24-48 hours.

Relay

Overview

Relay is an excellent choice if you want advanced cash flow management tools or multiple sub-accounts. It is particularly popular with service businesses and agencies that allocate revenue across different categories (operating expenses, taxes, profit, owner’s pay).

Key Features

  • No monthly fees, no minimum balance
  • Up to 20 individual checking accounts under one LLC
  • Up to 50 virtual debit cards
  • Accepts foreign-owned LLCs and non-US owners
  • FDIC-insured through Thread Bank ($3 million coverage through FDIC program)
  • Integrates with QuickBooks, Xero, Gusto, and Stripe
  • Team access with custom permissions
  • Free incoming wires; outgoing wires $5

Application Process

Apply at relayfi.com. The application is fully online. You will need the same core documents as Mercury. Relay’s approval process takes 1-5 business days for foreign-owned LLCs. Relay tends to be slightly more thorough in its compliance review than Mercury, so having your business description well-prepared matters.

Bluevine

Overview

Bluevine is the best option if you want to earn yield on your business cash balance. Its business checking account typically offers 2%+ APY on balances, which is meaningfully higher than what Mercury or Relay pay. Bluevine also offers business lines of credit, though those are not typically available to foreign-owned LLCs in the early stages.

Key Features

  • No monthly fees (standard tier)
  • High APY on checking balances (typically 2%+)
  • Accepts foreign-owned LLCs
  • FDIC-insured through Coastal Community Bank
  • Two free sub-accounts
  • Business debit card
  • Bill pay and ACH transfers

Application Process

Apply at bluevine.com. Same document requirements as Mercury and Relay. Bluevine’s approval timeline is typically 1-3 business days. Best suited for businesses that maintain larger cash balances and want to earn interest while waiting to deploy capital.

Choosing the Right Bank

You do not have to choose just one — many non-resident business owners maintain accounts at two banks for redundancy. That said, here is a simple guide:

  • Start with Mercury if you want simplicity, strong Stripe integration, and the most widely-used platform among online businesses.
  • Choose Relay if you want multiple sub-accounts for budgeting or run a business with multiple revenue streams or expense categories.
  • Add Bluevine if you carry significant cash reserves and want to earn yield on that balance.

Common Questions About US Banking for Non-Residents

Do I need a US address to open a Mercury, Relay, or Bluevine account?

No. All three banks accept foreign addresses for the account owner. Your Wyoming registered agent’s address covers the LLC’s registered address requirement. Some applications will ask for a “business address” — your home country address is acceptable.

Can I use Stripe with a Mercury account?

Yes. Mercury integrates directly with Stripe and is one of Stripe’s recommended banking partners. Your Stripe payouts will land in your Mercury account in USD, typically within 2 business days.

Will I be subject to US taxes by having a US bank account?

Having a US bank account does not by itself create US tax obligations. Tax liability depends on whether your LLC has US-sourced income or is engaged in a US trade or business. For non-residents earning entirely from non-US clients and sources, the bank account is simply a tool — not a taxable event. That said, your bank will report your account to the IRS under FATCA. This is an automatic bank obligation for compliance purposes.

What if my account application is declined?

Declines are uncommon when documentation is complete and the business description is clear. The most common reasons for declined applications are incomplete documentation, a vague or inconsistent business description, or a home country that appears on a high-risk financial jurisdiction list. If your application is declined, we help you understand why and identify the best path forward — which may include additional documentation or an alternative banking partner.

Can I send international wires from these accounts?

Yes. Mercury, Relay, and Bluevine all support international wires. Fees and processing times vary by bank and destination country. Mercury and Relay are generally faster and cheaper for international transfers. For regular large international transfers, pairing your US account with a Wise business account is a common and cost-effective approach.

Do I need a Social Security Number (SSN) to open these accounts?

No. Non-residents do not have an SSN. Mercury, Relay, and Bluevine accept your EIN (which we obtain for you) as the tax identification number for the LLC, and your foreign passport for personal identity verification.

How long does it take to get a functioning US bank account?

Once your Wyoming LLC is formed and your EIN is issued (total: 3-5 weeks), bank account approval takes 1-5 business days. Most clients have a fully functional US business bank account within 4-6 weeks of starting the process.
