We manage your Spain citizenship by naturalization from start to finish. Our local specialists, supported by licensed counsel where required, prepare and file your application on your behalf. The end result: your Spain naturalization application, filed once your residence record qualifies.
This is the citizenship by naturalization filing for Spain. Naturalization is the residence path. You are already allowed to live there, the clock has run, and the state is being asked to grant citizenship you were not born with.
The residence product that usually comes first, when you do not already hold status, is here. The other citizenship route is the paired descent page.
Quick facts
- You need a residence status that the nationality law counts. Tourist time usually does not.
- Police certificates cover the countries where you have lived, not only the destination.
- Language or civics steps apply only where that country publishes them. We do not add an exam the statute does not require.
- The residence clock below is included only when it is in our verified program notes. Otherwise it is confirmed on the call.
How Spain splits the two files
Descent, including grandchildren of exiles, is already covered on Spain citizenship by descent and Ley de Nietos (closed to new applications in October 2025). Naturalization is the other door: legal residence first, then a nationality application. The length of that residence depends on your nationality. We confirm the clock that applies to you on the call. We do not print a number on this page that is not in the verified program notes.
People usually hold status through the non-lucrative visa or the digital nomad visa before this filing is even possible.
How the filing actually runs
1. Confirm the status that counts. Permanent residence, a specific visa, or a shorter family route. Tourist stamps are not a citizenship clock.
2. Count the residence the way that country counts it. Some clocks start at the residence card, not at the application. Absences can reset the period. We do that count on your dates, not on a brochure.
3. Police and civil records. Home country, plus countries of long residence. Apostille and translation sit in front of the nationality office.
4. Language or civics, only if this country requires it. We do not schedule an exam as a default.
5. File, wait, then passport. Approval is a citizenship grant. The passport booklet is a separate request after you are a citizen.
Budget the residence years first, then the filing. The nationality office does not start your citizenship clock. The residence document does. A complete police file on the first day of residence does not make you eligible.
What we will not guess
We will not print a residence year, a generation cutoff, or a government fee for Spain unless it is in the verified program notes or already on a live page linked here. A wrong number on a citizenship page is worse than a call. If this page does not state the clock, that is deliberate. Bring your dates and the ancestor’s documents. We apply the current rule to your file, instead of a number copied from a blog.
What you receive
- A yes or no on whether citizenship by naturalization is the right Spain file
- The document list in the order the registry actually wants it
- Coordination of apostilles, translations, and the filing desk
- A handoff to the passport step once citizenship is registered or granted
What MyLatinLife does
You hire MyLatinLife. Local counsel files where the country requires a lawyer. We coordinate the record chain and tell you when the other route, descent or naturalization, is the one that fits. We do not promise an approval date.
Who this service is not for
People who qualify through a parent or grandparent. Use the descent page and skip the residence clock. People who have not started residence and want citizenship first. The residence file comes before this one.
Book the Spain citizenship call
We will tell you which of the two files is yours before you pay for apostilles.
After you book
On the call we name the route, the missing records, and whether local counsel has to sign the filing. If you engage us, the next step is the checklist and the order of legalizations. Government fees, apostilles, and translations are separate from our coordination. The coordination fee is quoted on the call. It is not printed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to live in Spain before naturalization?
The verified program note is on this page when we have one. If it is not printed above, we confirm the current residence period on the call. Do not use a number from a forum.
Is Spain citizenship by descent the same as naturalization?
No. Descent is a family registration. Naturalization is a grant after residence. If a parent or earlier ancestor was a citizen, read the descent page first.
Can I apply for Spain naturalization as a tourist?
No. The nationality office counts a residence status, not visitor stamps. Get the residence that the law counts, then let the clock run.
What if the Spain naturalization is refused?
The common refusals are an interrupted residence clock, a missing police certificate, or a language step that was skipped. Government fees already paid are not refundable. We do not guarantee a grant.
