Micronations, SEZs, Free Cities, and Network States

Sovereignty experiments sit on a continuum, not in one bucket. A Danube micronation, a Colón warehouse zone, a Roatán charter city, a Catawba tribal digital zone, and a Florianópolis pop-up network state are different products. This page maps the differences. Every named project gets its own article.

MyLatinLife covers the whole line because clients mix the nouns. After 1,500+ filings, the job is to put each project on the right rung — then still file a national residency when the job is a border, a bank, or a tax home.

The Continuum

Every rung is a standalone guide. Podcast episodes are interviews, not the article.

Micronations — definition · Liberland · Verdis · Sealand · Slowjamastan · Rose Island

SEZs — Latin America zones · Catawba Digital Economic Zone

Free cities / ZEDEs — charter cities guide · what is a charter city · ZEDE · Prospera · Ciudad Morazán

Network states — definition · Praxis · Ipê City · Pan-Armenian Network State

Edge-case documents — passports without countries

How to Use This Map

Start here if you do not yet know whether you are looking at a souvenir booklet, a customs park, a host-state city charter, a tribal commercial code, or a month-long builder village. Then open the guide for that type. Podcast episodes are interviews sitting under the guides — they are not the guides.

  1. If someone printed a passport nobody recognizes → micronations.
  2. If a host government fenced a tax/customs box → SEZs (including tribal digital zones).
  3. If a host statute tried to write new city rules on land → free cities / ZEDEs.
  4. If a cloud community or pop-up wants to become a country later → network states.
  5. If the document is real-ish but the issuer is not a normal UN member → edge-case passports.

Catawba and Ipê City sit on this table as full rungs, not footnotes. A tribal digital zone is still an SEZ. A Brazilian pop-up city is still a network-state project. They are not lesser because they are not Honduras ZEDEs.

Micronations

Self-declared countries with props and little or no host consent. Liberland and Verdis share a Danube theory. Sealand is the sea fort with a fraud chapter. Slowjamastan is the California highway sultanate. Rose Island is the Adriatic platform Italy demolished. Definition: what is a micronation.

These pages exist so a podcast guest does not become the only URL. The booklet is a hobby until a consulate issues it.

Special Economic Zones

Host governments already use zones to change commercial rules without writing a new country. Colón, ZOFRI, Manaus, and Dominican zonas francas are the Latin American classics — mapped here.

Catawba Digital Economic Zone belongs on the same rung, not in the micronation pile. The Catawba Indian Nation is the host sovereign. The product is a digital commercial code and e-corporations for fintech, not a novelty passport. That is why it gets a full article: it is an SEZ with a tribal wrapper, and clients will keep comparing it to Wyoming and Prospera whether we write it or not.

Free Cities, Charter Cities, ZEDEs

This is the host-state city experiment: special commercial law on designated land. Latin America’s live cases are Honduras ZEDEs — Prospera on Roatán and Ciudad Morazán in Choloma — under a contested statute explained in what is a ZEDE. Further reading: charter cities in Latin America.

A free city is not automatically a micronation. The whole point of the ZEDE fight is that a host legislature once said yes. That is a different risk from planting a flag on a riverbank.

Network States and Pop-Up Cities

Cloud-first projects that want land and recognition later. Definition: what is a network state.

Ipê City is the Latin American pop-up on this rung: builder villages in Florianópolis, network-state language, Brazilian immigration still in force. It deserves a standalone guide because it is the region’s live example, not because it issues a passport (it does not).

The Pan-Armenian Network State is the diaspora-coordination example: same vocabulary, different geography, still not a second republic. Both articles exist so the podcast is not the only record.

Praxis is the demand-first city example: an online community that selected a physical development inside Uruguay. Its +Colonia announcement is a real location decision, not sovereign status.

Sovereignty Edge-Case Documents

Some issuers are not micronations and not UN-normal either: SMOM, Vatican, refugee travel documents, BN(O), indigenous nation passports, disputed-state booklets. Those live in Passports Without Countries. They are the document half of this continuum — what an officer might actually see.

Which rung is your actual problem?

If the job is a second nationality, a residency card, or a tax home, we file countries that already exist. The experiments stay on the map; they do not replace the filing.

What Still Has to Be a Real Country

Immigration stamps, tax residency, banking KYC, and naturalization still run through recognized states. A Catawba e-corporation does not exit the IRS. An Ipê Village month does not start a Brazilian citizenship clock. A Prospera LLC does not replace Honduras residency if you want to live there. A Liberland booklet does not open Schengen.

Use the continuum to classify the experiment. Use residency comparison, the passport index, and a consultation when you need the country layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a micronation and a free city?

A micronation declares itself a country. A free city or ZEDE is a special jurisdiction inside a host country that already exists.

Is Catawba a micronation?

No. It is a tribal digital special economic zone. It still gets a full article because it is a live sovereignty-adjacent commercial project clients compare with Prospera and Wyoming.

Is Ipê City a country?

No. It is a Brazilian pop-up network-state project in Florianópolis. It still gets a full article as the LatAm example of that rung.

Where do charter cities sit on this map?

On the free-city / ZEDE rung — host-state city experiments. Start at the charter cities guide, then Prospera and Ciudad Morazán.

Can any of these replace Paraguay or Mexico residency?

No. File a national path for residency and passports. Use this guide to understand the experiments around that path.
