The Slowjamastan Passport: California’s Desert Sultanate

Slowjamastan — officially the United Territories of the Sovereign Nation of the People’s Republic of Slowjamastan — is an 11-acre micronation on California State Route 78 in Imperial County, between Ocotillo Wells and Westmorland. Radio DJ Randy “R Dub!” Williams bought the desert plot, named himself sultan, and started issuing passports with hip-hop quotations. It is funny. It is not a country.

We put it in the same series as Sealand and Liberland because clients confuse souvenir sovereignty with a second nationality. After 1,500+ client files, the test is simple: can a border system load your document? Slowjamastan fails that test on purpose, and that is the joke.

Educational only. None of these micronation documents are a substitute for a recognized national passport. Do not present an unrecognized booklet as your only travel document. This is not legal advice.

Short Answer

Slowjamastan is a self-declared micronation on empty Imperial County desert, landlocked by the United States. Williams is a San Diego slow-jams DJ who visited every UN member state, stopped at the Republic of Molossia in Nevada, then bought land and seceded from his open-air “capital,” Dublândia. The project issues passports, prints a currency called the duble, bans Crocs, and claims tens of thousands of online citizens. The United States still treats the parcel as California. You still owe US tax if you are a US person. You still need a real passport to fly home.

What Slowjamastan Is

The site is a highway-adjacent strip: a border sign, a control post, a desk, a flag, and whatever props the cabinet has hauled into the wind. There is no resident population. Visiting is a photo stop plus a stamp in a novelty booklet. The national animal is a raccoon. The anthem is titled like a slow jam. The time zone is Slowjamastan Standard Time. That is the product.

Spellings wander — Slowjamastan is the operator’s form; people search “Slowjamistan” and still mean this place. The legal form does not wander. It is unrecognized. Imperial County still has sheriffs. California still has parks rangers. Williams even advertises VIP parking for both, which is the opposite of secession.

The Sultan and the Desert Plot

Randy Williams is a Chicago-born DJ (Sunday Night Slow Jams / Magic 92.5 in San Diego) who made a completionist travel project out of the UN list, then decided the list was missing a country with his name on the letterhead. He paid on the order of twenty thousand dollars for about eleven acres and declared independence from Dublândia.

That origin story is the opposite of a Honduran ZEDE or a Paraguayan cédula. Nobody in Sacramento signed a charter. Nobody at the State Department opened a file. The land is still US soil with a themed gate. If you want a governance experiment that at least starts from host-state law, that is charter cities and economic zones — Prospera, Morazán — not a desert bit.

Passports, Currency, and Laws

The Slowjamastan passport is sold as a novelty (public listings have been around sixty dollars) with an explicit warning that most countries do not accept it and that presenting it in the wrong place can get you fined or detained. Believe the warning. Citizenship applications are a web form. Cabinet jobs are a web form. Taxes are advertised as zero because there is no tax authority, not because the IRS disappeared.

The duble is play money. Crocs are banned. Those rules are entertainment. They do not override California criminal law, US immigration law, or your home-country tax residency. A US citizen who “moves” to Slowjamastan has moved to Imperial County.

Want a passport that actually clears a border?

Micronation booklets are a hobby and a warning. If you need a second nationality that works at immigration, we map descent, naturalization, and residency paths that states already recognize.

Does Any Country Stamp It?

Williams has said the booklet has been stamped in a growing list of UN states during his own travel — South Africa, New Zealand, Vanuatu, and the United States among names that have appeared in interviews. A courtesy stamp in a second booklet is a souvenir. It is not a visa, not an entry grant, and not proof that Slowjamastan is in the ICAO codebook.

Sealand learned the hard way that micronation passports can also become fraud inventory. Read the Sealand passport story before you treat any unofficial booklet as identity. If a document is cheap, unrecognized, and sold to strangers, criminals will notice faster than diplomats will.

Hobby Nation vs Plan B

Slowjamastan is a good hobby nation: visit the sign, meet the sultan, laugh, leave. It is a bad Plan B. It does not give you a second nationality, a tax home, a banking KYC story, or a place to live when a real government is angry at you. The citizens do not live there. You should not either, except for an afternoon.

For a passport that works, start at the Latin America passport index and passports without countries so you can see the difference between a Vatican or SMOM edge-case and a desert joke. Then file something a consulate already understands.

Want a second passport of your own?

Documents like this one are tied to a specific status, organization or territory, and most people cannot apply for them. If you want a second citizenship you can hold yourself, the realistic routes are citizenship by descent, residency that leads to naturalization, and citizenship by investment. Our second passport guide compares them, and the Latin America citizenship by descent guide covers every country in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Slowjamastan a real country?

No. It is an unrecognized micronation on private land in Imperial County, California. The United States still surrounds it on every side.

How do you spell Slowjamastan?

The operator uses Slowjamastan. Searchers often type Slowjamistan. Same desert sultanate.

Can I use a Slowjamastan passport to travel?

Not as your only document. The project’s own sales copy warns that most countries do not accept it. Carry a recognized national passport.

Does Slowjamastan citizenship change my taxes?

No. US persons remain US persons. A micronation web form does not create a foreign tax home.

Is this the same as Sealand or Liberland?

Same family of unrecognized projects, different flavor. Sealand is a sea fort with a fraud chapter. Liberland is a Danube land claim. Slowjamastan is a California highway attraction.
