Orquídea ZEDE: Honduras’s Agricultural Special Zone

ZEDE Orquídea is the third named Honduras Zone for Employment and Economic Development: an agro-industrial park in Las Tapias, San Marcos de Colón, in Choluteca — the south, not Roatán and not Choloma. Greenhouses, export vegetables, Delaware-flavored private commercial law in the operator story. It is not a nomad hub.

English internet attention is maybe ninety percent Prospera. This page exists so the third ZEDE is not a footnote. After 1,500+ files, we still start most Honduras clients at residency, then decide whether any zone belongs in the stack.

Educational only. Zone rules, maritime status, and Honduran ZEDE politics change. A campus, free zone, seastead, or pop-up is not a passport. Confirm live with counsel. Not legal or tax advice.

MLL walkthrough of the best-known ZEDE — useful context; Orquídea is the agricultural sibling, not the island one.

Short answer

Orquídea is a farm-and-greenhouse ZEDE aimed at export produce (peppers, cherry and grape tomatoes in public descriptions), not a founder campus. Parent-company story: Agroalpha, with Víctor Wilson as a visible promoter. Land area in reporting is on the order of a couple of hundred hectares — larger than Morazán’s campus, differently used. If you wanted a laptop and a reef, you wanted Prospera. If you wanted cheap gated housing next to maquilas, you wanted Morazán.

Where it is and what it grows

San Marcos de Colón sits in Honduras’s southern corridor toward the Nicaraguan border, far from Bay Islands tourism. The product is agribusiness: large greenhouses, packing for the US market, local labor. Reporting has described dozens of hectares under greenhouse and hundreds of jobs in the operator’s projections. Treat employment numbers as operator claims.

This is why Orquídea almost never appears in digital-nomad blogs. There is nothing wrong with that. It is a different SKU.

The third ZEDE

Prospera is the island company/tax product. Ciudad Morazán is the Choloma housing-plus-factory product. Orquídea is the southern agro park. All three sat under the same ZEDE statute. Comparison table lives on Prospera vs Ciudad Morazán; add Orquídea as the column that does not sell you a lifestyle.

Public materials said Orquídea adopted Delaware common law as applicable private law for commercial matters. That is a company-law costume, not a US embassy.

Law and the national fight

Congress later repealed the organic law; the Supreme Court later held the framework unconstitutional. Operators argued legal-stability agreements. Reporting has said Orquídea showed willingness to operate under the ordinary zona libre (ZOLI) agricultural-park regime — a quieter path than Prospera’s ICSID headline. That does not make the political risk zero. It does mean this ZEDE may look more like a classic agro export park than a startup city.

Honduras residency is the usual door

Orquídea is not a visa. If the country is the Plan B, we file national immigration — then talk zones only if they fit the job.

Who should care

Agribusiness operators comparing a southern Honduras park with a normal zona libre. Researchers completing the three-ZEDE map. It has little relevance for someone choosing a beach town in Honduras. Local communities in Las Tapias have had a land-and-labor fight over the project; that is part of the record, not a lifestyle footnote.

How it fits a flag stack

Company flag: only if you are actually in export produce. Personal tax flag: no. Passport: no. Physical flag: southern Honduras agro work, not a laptop season. Completing the three-ZEDE set is why this URL exists. Using it as a Plan B identity is a category error.

If you are mapping Honduras for residency, Orquídea should not change the filing. The country still has Rentista, investor, and other national paths with presence rules that beat most of Central America. Add a zone only when the zone is the job — greenhouse, maquila housing, or Roatán company.

Researchers should read local reporting from Las Tapias alongside operator decks. Land concentration, biosphere-reserve adjacency, and labor conditions are part of the ZEDE story in the south. A directory row that says “live” does not mean uncontested.

Before you book Orquídea

Write down the job in one sentence. If the sentence contains the word visa, residency, passport, or tax home, you are on the wrong product page and should open a national immigration guide. If the sentence is about goods, a campus job, a floating prototype, a longevity season, or export produce, you are in the right aisle — then still add the host-country stamp as a second sentence.

Ask whether you are looking at a greenhouse tenant, a zona libre park, or a lifestyle ZEDE. If the answer is lifestyle, you are in the wrong department of Honduras.

Bring counsel who already files in that country. Do not hire a Twitter jurisdiction broker. MyLatinLife’s bias is boring: classify the rung, file the country, treat the experiment as optional overlay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ZEDE Orquídea?

The agricultural Honduras ZEDE in San Marcos de Colón, Choluteca: greenhouses and export produce, not a nomad city.

Where is Orquídea compared with Prospera and Morazán?

South, near the Nicaraguan border. Prospera is Roatán. Morazán is Choloma in the Sula Valley.

Can I live in Orquídea as an expat?

It is not designed as a residential free city. Housing plus factories is Morazán’s product. Confirm any on-site housing with the operator.

Is Orquídea still a ZEDE?

It was constituted as one. The national statute is in a political and court fight. Some reporting says this park was open to ordinary zona libre rules. Treat status as live-and-contested.

Does Orquídea give me Honduran residency?

No. Use national immigration paths.
