How We Score Each Country
The composite is the average of cost of living, tax system, ease of residency, safety and stability, healthcare, infrastructure and internet, banking and money, remote work and business, lifestyle and integration, and long-term optionality. Each metric receives a 10% weight. A 5 is a strong default for a typical North American expat; a 1 signals serious friction or risk.
This is a country-level shortlist, not tax or legal advice. City choice changes the lived result—especially in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Argentina. Use the Cost of Living Index, Safety Index, and Residency Comparison to pressure-test finalists.
What the Ranking Is—and Is Not
We use MLL’s existing country cost, safety, and immigration datasets alongside public health and infrastructure data, then apply an explicit editorial rubric to practical banking, remote-work, and lifestyle factors. The full score ledger is refreshed at least annually and whenever a material residency, tax, safety, or currency change occurs. It is designed for people who actually plan to live in Latin America, not for choosing a passport to put in a drawer.
