Dominica is not the Dominican Republic. One is a small English-speaking Eastern Caribbean island with a donation citizenship program. The other is a Spanish-speaking country on Hispaniola, inside MyLatinLife’s 20-country Latin America count, with rentista and pensionado residency. People still book the wrong airport.
If you want a second passport via Caribbean CBI, you are looking at Dominica (and peers). If you want to live in Punta Cana or Santo Domingo on a pension, you want the Dominican Republic.

Dominica: the Commonwealth, not the Republic
Pronounce it dom-in-EE-ka. Independent from Britain, English official language, common-law system, CARICOM and Commonwealth member. Nature island marketing, diving, a small capital. It is culturally Caribbean, not Latin American. It is not in our 20-country LatAm set. See the complete list of 20.
Internationally it is known for a citizenship by investment program — a donation (or real-estate) path to a second passport, not a Spanish-speaking residency visa. How CBI works in general: what is citizenship by investment. How it compares on price to other donation programs: cheapest CBI. Confirm current contribution levels on the official program before you treat any blog number as a quote.
Dominican Republic: the Latin American one
Pronounce it doh-min-ih-CAN. Spanish, Spanish colonial, shares Hispaniola with Haiti. Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial is the oldest European city in the Americas. Punta Cana is the tourism machine. This is the country in our residency catalog.
Expat paths we actually file: rentista and pensionado (passive income / pension) and investor visa. Territorial treatment of foreign income for new residents is a DGI topic — read the live service page, do not copy a forum’s “three-year holiday” as law.
CBI vs residency — do not mix the products
Dominica CBI is a passport product. You are not “getting DR residency” by donating to Dominica. Dominican Republic residency is a stay-and-file product. You are not “getting a Commonwealth CBI passport” by renting in Las Terrenas.
If a consultant uses the names interchangeably, stop. The paperwork, language, tax story, and airport are different.
Airports and mail
Dominica: DOM (Douglas-Charles) near Marigot, plus a smaller west-coast strip. Dominican Republic: SDQ (Santo Domingo) and PUJ (Punta Cana), among others. Booking DOM when you meant Punta Cana is a real mistake, not a joke.
Mail and KYC: “Dominican” on a form is ambiguous. Write the full country name. Banks and courier companies do not find this as funny as Twitter does.
Mnemonic: Republic = Spanish Hispaniola = SDQ/PUJ. Bare “Dominica” = English island = DOM. Roseau ≠ Santo Domingo.
A third mix-up is Haiti. Haiti is the western third of Hispaniola, French/Haitian Creole, and not in the MLL 20. It shares an island with the Dominican Republic. It shares nothing with Dominica except letters. If a form asks “Caribbean island,” write the full official name.
Language test: if the tourism site is in Spanish and selling all-inclusives, you mean the Dominican Republic. If it is in English and selling hiking and a second passport, you mean Dominica. If someone says “the Dominican” in an expat Facebook group for Punta Cana, they mean the Republic. If a CBI broker says “Dominica,” they mean the Commonwealth. Ask which airport code they are flying into before you send documents.
We do not treat Dominica as a Latin America residency destination. We do treat the Dominican Republic as one — pensionado, rentista, investor. Sister “is X part of Latin America?” pieces in the series are useful for Belize, Brazil, and the English Caribbean; they are not a reason to file the wrong country’s packet. Start at the 20-country list if you are still mapping the region.
Citizenship clocks are different too. DR residency can lead to naturalization on a Spanish-speaking, Latin American timeline once you have legal stay. Dominica CBI is a passport purchase with its own due diligence — not a substitute for living in Santo Domingo, and not a Paraguay-style territorial residency. Pick the product, then pick the island.
Shipping and banks: a package labeled only “Dominicana” will go to the wrong place as often as the right one. Use “Dominican Republic” or “Commonwealth of Dominica” spelled out, plus the city. The same rule applies to KYC. We would rather you over-specify than send apostilles to Roseau when the DGM appointment is in Santo Domingo. If you are filing with us, say “DR” or “Dominica CBI” in the first sentence of the intake so nobody pulls the wrong service page.
If You Meant the Dominican Republic
We file DR residency. We do not mix it up with Eastern Caribbean CBI. Bring the country you actually want.
