The Colón Free Zone (Zona Libre de Colón) is Panama’s giant re-export machine at the Atlantic mouth of the Canal. It is a classic special economic zone: bonded warehouses, wholesale, duty treatment. It is not a free city, not a ZEDE, and not a place most foreigners should plan to live.
MyLatinLife files Panama residencies and companies. We put Colón on the sovereignty directory because people search “economic zone” and land on charter-city Twitter. After 1,500+ client files, the job is to split the warehouse from the jurisdiction pitch.
Educational only. Zone rules, maritime status, and Honduran ZEDE politics change. A campus, free zone, seastead, or pop-up is not a passport. Confirm live with counsel. Not legal or tax advice.

Short answer
If you import, hold, and re-export goods through the Canal, Colón can be a real tool — with Panamanian companies, customs brokers, and counsel. If you wanted Prospera, Ciudad Morazán, or a network-state village, you wanted a different rung. See special economic zones in Latin America for the map, and this page for the Colón-specific product.
What the Colón Free Zone is
Goods land, sit in a designated customs box, and leave again under a treatment you would not get on an ordinary Panamanian street. The point is logistics next to the Canal, not a new municipal constitution. Tenants are wholesalers, distributors, and traders. English is a business language inside the zone. Spanish and Panamanian procedure still run the country around it.
A zone company is not a visa. A warehouse lease is not tax residency. US persons stay on worldwide taxation. Banks will still do KYC as if you asked for a Panama account, because you did.
Who actually uses it
Traders who already have a Canal-adjacent supply chain. Not digital nomads. Not retirees hunting a Pensionado. Not founders who want a low-tax holding company with a beach photo. Those people should be on residency, foundations, or — if they insist on a city experiment — Prospera with eyes open about Honduran politics.
If your comparison set is Dubai’s Jebel Ali, Colón is the hemispheric cousin: trade infrastructure with a host state, not a seastead. The two models serve different purposes.
Not a charter city
A charter city or ZEDE tries to write commercial law for daily life on land. Colón does not. It does not sell you a coexistence agreement, a lump-sum personal tax product, or a gated industrial neighborhood. Calling it a free city is a category error that wastes a plane ticket.
Need Panama, not a warehouse brochure?
Residency, companies, and banking are national products. We map the stack before you rent space in Colón.
The city vs the zone
The city of Colón is a separate, often blunt conversation — safety, services, and whether you would actually sleep there. See our Colón city guide. Many operators commute the zone from Panama City or stay in the hotel strip and never pretend the free zone is a neighborhood.
Directory row: classic SEZ, live, Panama, Latin America. Hub: sovereignty projects.
How it fits a flag stack
Company flag: maybe, if you actually move goods. Personal tax flag: no. Passport flag: no. Physical flag: Panama City or nowhere near Colón, for most clients. The mistake is using a Canal warehouse as a Plan B identity. Plan B identity is a residency card you can renew.
Operators who already have a Panama corporation sometimes add a zone tenant story because a customer asked for bonded space. That is a logistics SOW. It should be priced and lawyered like logistics, not like a charter-city retreat. If the customer cannot explain which Harmonized System codes they ship, they do not need this page’s product.
We will still take the call. The output is usually “you wanted Panama residency and a holding company, and someone on Twitter said zone.” That is a cheap mistake to catch before a Colón site visit.
Before you book Colón
Write down the job in one sentence. If the sentence contains the word visa, residency, passport, or tax home, you are on the wrong product page and should open a national immigration guide. If the sentence is about goods, a campus job, a floating prototype, a longevity season, or export produce, you are in the right aisle — then still add the host-country stamp as a second sentence.
Ask your broker which HS codes, which warehouse class, and which bank will touch the account. If they answer with a charter-city slide, hang up.
Bring counsel who already files in that country. Do not hire a Twitter jurisdiction broker. MyLatinLife’s bias is boring: classify the rung, file the country, treat the experiment as optional overlay.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Colón Free Zone?
Panama’s main re-export and wholesale free zone at the Atlantic end of the Canal. A customs/tax box for goods, not a new city government.
Can I get Panama residency through the Colón Free Zone?
Not from the zone itself. Use a national Panama residency path. A tenant permit is a company status.
Is Colón Free Zone a charter city like Prospera?
No. Prospera is a Honduras ZEDE. Colón is a classic zona franca.
Should digital nomads move to Colón for the free zone?
Almost never. The zone is for trade. Lifestyle in the city of Colón is a different, often harder, question.
How does it compare with ZOFRI or Manaus?
Same rung: host-state SEZ. Different goods, geography, and Brazilian vs Chilean vs Panamanian procedure. Dedicated pages will cover those; until then see the LatAm SEZ hub.
