The town has been named a “Pueblo Magico” of Mexico due to its rich history and culture.

It’s one of many cities in Mexico that is popular among domestic tourists, but somewhat unknown to international ones.

WEATHER IN TEPOZTLÁN

Yearly temperatures range from 8°C to 29°C. Any time of year is suitable for a visit, but November to May is ideal if you wish to avoid evening rainfall.

SAFETY IN TEPOZTLÁN

Tepoztlán is a very safe city. You should have no troubles walking the main streets during the day or night. The locals are used to touritsts here and it’s very welcoming. The one precaution we suggest is: if you’re staying far away from the main strip, perhaps take a taxi to your house/hotel or Airbnb as opposed to walking. Although crime is rare here, the farther you get from the main street with all the bars and restaurants, the more quiet and deserting things get. Don’t take any chances!

MUST DO

Hike to the pyramid, El Tepozteco, for a nice view of the city and surrounding areas.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN TEPOZTLÁN

Rental prices in Tepoztlán are very reasonable. $300/month should be enough to get something near to the main avenue (5 de Mayo).

COST OF LIVING IN TEPOZTLÁN

Assuming you’re not going to the touristy restaurants and bars several times a week, you can live here in Tepoztlán for $1000/month.

The artisan community is big here. If you’re into crafts, woodworking or any form of art, you may be able to sell your goods to the tourists that flock here on weekends.

IS THERE UBER IN TEPOZTLÁN

Uber operates in nearby Cuernavaca. You can find a driver who will bring you to Tepoztlán, but you may have difficulties finding one in Tepoztlán to bring you out of the town.

IS TEPOZTLÁN A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE?

Tepoztlán would suit many expats well. It is touristy during the weekends, but during the week it is extremely relaxed and peaceful. The cost of living is low, it’s safe and the surrounding hills are beautiful.

However, it’s a small town, and many folks may find themselves wanting for more action during the week.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that there is a lot of drinking on the main avenue by tourists during the weekend. Some may find this distasteful. But, other than that, we consider Tepoztlán worth checking out for a prospective expat.
