SAFETY IN IQUITOS
Iquitos has a bit of a sordid reputation for safety. Gang activity is a problem in the Amazon region of Peru, and in Iquitos many crimes occur that are related to that activity. In addition to that, scams and petty crime are common here. There is police corruption, so you may find yourself pressured to pay a bribe for no reason. Taxi drivers are also notorious for overcharging. If you go out to a bar or nightclub (there are many) try to arrange for transportation to and from your destination (like a trustworthy, on-call taxi driver).
Jungle tours and eco-lodges are a big thing here. Either is worth checking out — just be sure to book your tour through a reputable company.

IS IQUITOS A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE?
In short, no, we do not recommend Iquitos for most expats. The infrastructure here is somewhat lacking. There are also safety concerns, and all of the scams directed at foreigners can be tiresome. In addition, the heat and humidity in the summer months will not be ideal for most. Iquitos is great for visiting, but we don’t suggest relocating here.
