The capital of Colombia’s Tolima department. Ibagué is often overlooked by tourists; similar to Latacunga in Ecuador, it serves primarily as a jumping off point for nearby hikes.
WEATHER IN IBAGUÉ
Yearly temperatures range from 17°C to 28°C. It’s another Colombian city (like Medellin and Pereira) with spring-like temperatures throughout the year.
SAFETY IN IBAGUÉ
Ibagué is a fairly safe city. Normal precautions should be sufficient here. Violent crime is uncommon, but petty crime can occur. Watch your belongings while out and about, and don’t walk around with your head down in your cell phone!
We don’t have any specific recommendations for Ibagué. Visit El Parque Bolívar in the city center. It’s somewhat of a gather place for locals.
RENT AN APARTMENT IN IBAGUÉ
Ibagué is yet another affordable destination. Like in Bucaramanga or Manizales, $300/month should be OK as a minimum budget for a monthly apartment rental.

Yes, we consider Ibagué an underrated expat destination (Colombia has a lot of underrated expat destinations!). Although the city has over half a million people, it feels much smaller, it’s safe and within driving distance of Bogota. Although the town can seem sleepy compared to similar sized cities like Bucaramanga, it is a solid choice for an expat on a budget that wants a quiet life close to the city.
