A resort destination that is more varied than Punta Cana. Very nice beaches and a lively party scene. If you’re looking to meet women (both normal and ‘working’), this is a good place to do it. Worth a stop if you’re in the Dominican Republic.
WEATHER: Tropical (20-34 °C). Humid in the winter.
MUST DO: Beach! As well as any water-related activities. Oh, do some drinking as well.
DATING IN PUERTO PLATA
Fairly decent chance, but a frustrating process. Many of the locals girls are hustlers, and many of the foreign ones are intolerable (I’m including the town of Sosua in this assessment). If you want to meet a Dominican girl, don’t count on Puerto Plata to provide. But there is a general sense of licentiousness around here, so sex should not be too difficult to come by if you’re standards aren’t too high.

WOMEN IN PUERTO PLATA
There are some nice girls in Puerto Plata/Sosua but, again, many are for purchase. On the beaches you’ll see plenty of amazing bodies but the faces aren’t at San Francisco levels. The only advantage this Dominican city has over others in this department is that you’re likely to see a lot more skin.
LEARNING SPANISH IN PUERTO PLATA
If you want to meet women in Latin America, you will need to know a bit of Spanish. PickUp Spanish is an entertaining and informative course that teaches Latin American Spanish in a way that is geared toward meeting and dating latinas!
Skip the boring classes and…
RENT AN APARTMENT IN PUERTO PLATA
$500.00 or more. Puerto Plata is a very hotel-oriented place so it might be tough to snare a cheap apartment.
NIGHTLIFE IN PUERTO PLATA
Puerto Plata is pretty standard for resort destination nightlife. Only with more casinos. And hookers. The best thing to do is to follow the herd to wherever looks exciting. The chance of hooking-up with a non-pro here is next to none if you don’t speak any Spanish.
I recommend: Pure. In with one of the casinos. A good mix of locals and tourists. But you can’t go too wrong by wandering into any loud and busy establishment.
SAFETY IN PUERTO PLATA
Puerto Plata is no less safe than any major tourist spots in Mexico. Keep an eye on your belongings and you’ll be alright.
COST OF LIVING IN PUERTO PLATA
GROCERIES: Milk (1L)= $1.20 Loaf of Bread= $1.40 Eggs= $1.80 Water (1.5L)= $1.00 Cigarettes= $3.00
BOTTLE OF BEER: $3.00
HOSTEL DORM BED/NIGHT $30.00 for a cheap hotel room
Doesn’t seem to be much available for the short-term traveller. Diving here isn’t great for instance, and hotel jobs are mostly for locals
Nothing distinguishing it from any other resort town in any other country. Go if you’re there, don’t if you’re not. I’d opt for Playa del Carmen in Mexico if you’re looking for this type of fun.
OVERALL RATING: 6.75/10
